Bogura City Corporation triumphed in their debut appearance at the Bogura Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament. On Wednesday, in a thrilling final held at the football ground adjacent to Shaheed Chandu Stadium, they defeated Bogura Sadar Upazila 5-4 in a penalty shootout to claim the championship.
As the match remained goalless during regulation time, it was decided by a penalty shootout. The teams were initially tied at 4-4 in the shootout, necessitating an additional round where each side took one more kick. Bogura City Corporation successfully converted their shot, while the City goalkeeper saved the attempt by the Sadar Upazila team, securing the title for the City Corporation in their first-ever participation.
City Corporation goalkeeper Abdul Hakim was named ‘Man of the Final’ for saving the decisive penalty. Following the match, State Minister for Sports Aminul Haque handed over the trophy to the winners.
Presided over by Bogura Deputy Commissioner Taufiqur Rahman, the award ceremony was attended by Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Md. Yusuf Ali, MPs Rezaul Karim Badsha and Suraiya Jerin, Bogura City Corporation Administrator MR Islam Swadhin, Superintendent of Police Mirza Sayem Mahmud (PPM), sports organizer Syed Aminul Haque Dewan Sajal, and Bogura District Sports Association Member Secretary Khaja Abu Hayat Hiru, among others.
The tournament champions received a trophy and a cash prize of Tk 3 lakh, while the runners-up were awarded a trophy and Tk 1.5 lakh. The tournament was jointly organized by the District Administration and the District Sports Association, featuring teams from Bogura’s 13 Upazilas and the Bogura City Corporation.
Thousands of spectators enjoyed the match, often at great personal risk. Young people were seen watching the game from the rooftops of surrounding high-rise buildings, tree branches, and even the abandoned floodlight towers of Shaheed Chandu Stadium.
